What's the place of intuition and mathematics when it comes to Art ? Is our perception of beauty (in general) "emprisoned" by the golden ratio ? Would Mona Lisa still be a masterpiece in a different cultural context? What about Jeff Koons's Balloon Dog ?
Is there such as thing as an universal form of beauty ? What do you think ?
Culture is fundamental when it comes to art. Not only that we’re sometimes being told to like some pieces, art sometimes serve a greater purpose like promoting a regime, an ideology. Church’s power, in a way, was linked to art ! The way Jesus was physically depicted as well as the Greco Roman inspiration for major Catholic monuments is much deeper than questions of “Beauty.” There is a profound sense of symbolism that is to be deciphered
I think that both are deeply connected. Can we separate Subjectivity from Intuition ? No because they're both indivisble - 2 faces of a same coin. Intuition would be the data your brain can't give sense to, while subjectivity would consist of its emotional translation.
Subjectively, I find Mona Lisa beautiful because I intuitively discern all the perfect ratios behind it. Still, I can't give sense to them counsciously.
Sometimes, assymetry can be "disturbing" as well - while not being aware of. All people, at least once in their lives, have been bothered by unstraight lines (in architecture, painting etc.).
The interesting question would be how come? No straight line is "natural." Nature's aesthetics doesn't follow the rigid rules we have established for architecture and art more generally - how come?
