Within industries ranging from the corporate one to the sports one, men earn, in most cases, higher wages than women.
Novak Djokovic, Tennis‘ world number one, stated that men deserve to get paid more than women in his sport. This has sparked a reaction from women’s best player Serena Williams who then slammed Djokovic for his comments.
This pay gap has, over the years, also provoked angry reactions from women in general, reflected by movements led by the feminist society in order to curb that gap.
"In 2020, women earn 81 cents for every dollars earned by men." In fact when men and women have the same employment charasteristic and they do exactly the same job and they have the same age and experience ,women earn $0,98 for every dollar earned by an equivalent men. In an other words, women earn 2 % less for no reason.
One of the explanation for this gap is that women have to take a break in their careers to have children. I have to say I never heard a such sexist argument. The true reason is there are a strong discrimination against women. For instance 42 % of women have experienced a gender descrimination at work compared to 20 % of men.
I think it will be essential to reduce the gap between men and women in taxing companies which does not respect rules. It will be a way to restore meritocraty. Our children cannot live in a world with an injustice against women.
Furthemore, women do more housework than men thus they have less time than men to be focus on their jobs. States have to compensate for this injustice in giving an additional income for women.
Well, salary should be based on performance, regardless of gender. I think we can all agree to that. If we don’t, then we should look into ethnicity, sexual preferences, religion before deciding on someone’s salary. Because it is based on performance, it also means that women athlete Cannot and shouldn’t be kid as much as men UNTIL they generate similar revenue. People tend to forget that Sport is a business and well oiled machine. We tend to forget, because sport is linked to emotions, that teams, clubs are companies. Listed sometimes. And salaries are also distributed according to balance sheets, PNLs etc. It’s not someone who’s just sitting behind his screen while drinking A beer that decides that women should be in the kitchen and be paid 10% of what men earn. There is a reason behind it. I am convinced that the day WNBA starts generating more revenue than the NBA, female players might and should earn more than men. Can I ask my boss for a promotion only because I am part of a minority? Or will he look at my achievements first?
"Salary should be based on performance" - how can a woman's salary continue to be based on her performance if her boss is sexist an unable to see her talents separated from her gender? Your statement is based on the preusumption that those who are responsible for giving promotions are capable of seeing all their employees' achievements separate from their gender, race, sexuality, religion etc. By promoting you, your boss is putting more and more of the company's future in your hands because the boss trusts you; how can they do this if they don't trust you because of your religion? There are safeguards in place to prevent achievements in the workplace from going unrewarded, but don't underestimate the power an employer's discrimination has to obstacle any promotions for people because of their gender, race, sexuality and religion.
